    Bill,

How do you calculate the impact that refs have on the game?

    Thanks,
    Matt

I just compile their stats for the year, the home advantage is the average winning margin that home teams have when that certain ref called the game. Same with the O/U.

Hi, just wondering if you could give me some insight into all of the criteria you use in your mathematical models. Also how you adjust your basic models for trends, home/away e.g. how do you quantify these multipliers. Very interested and appreciate what you are doing, everything seems to be going very well. Also on a sidenote could you explain how you got to 96-94 for the timberwolves at the magic. I tracked the Magic against the top 8 teams based on pace (Timbs being 2nd) and they averaged 105-95, winning 7 out of 8 SU. They also stepped up their pace to an average of 95, seems they play better against these higher paced sides. Any feedback is appreciated, BOL.

Great question. My criteria for power ranking the teams are pretty simple.. the four factors of basketball: effective FG%, free throw’s/FG attempt, offensive rebounds/possession, turnovers/possession. You have to split the rankings between home and away, and I mean completely exclusive rankings for when the teams play home and when they play on the road, because there is no universal home court advantage figure, and some teams defy logic and play much better on the road than at home (Nets this year.)

The trickiest part is that you have to weight the rankings for strength of schedule according to your ranking of opponents each team faces and it is dynamic because the rankings are changing everyday so a team that doesn’t play can actually have a shift in ranking due to how a past opponent is progressing/regressing.

In regards to the trends, I use a 3:1 ratio. Meaning that I only shift the edge for a given team by one “game” point for every 3 trends they hold over their opponent (as a relative value.) So in the case of MIN/ORL I give the Magic a 2-point trend advantage because Minnesota has a 4-trend deficit, while Orlando has a 3-trend advantage, therefore Orland holds a 7-trend relative advantage which equals 2 “game points” difference. (7/3=2.33 rounded down to 2.)

I appreciate your interest and interaction.

Hi, just like to ask if I like to create a model for soccer, do you have any clues for me about how do I go about doing it? Thanks.

It takes a lot of trial and error and a big sample size to come up with something that works long-term. Try to cap the market instead of the teams and players, is my best advice.
